Things that Go Bump on the Foot

whats the bump on my footUnexpected bumps in the night can be quite spooky. You’re not sure what caused them and you’re left wondering if it’s a sign of danger or a problem that can wait for morning. The same can be said for unexpected bumps on the side of your foot. An unusual foot bump is a sign that something is not right, but it’s not always obvious how serious the condition is simply by looking at it. Figuring out exactly what caused the bump can help alleviate any fears and get you the care you need.

Foot bumps develop for a variety of reasons. They could be a deformity from pressure and friction, a soft tissue problem, or even damage to a joint. Here are some of the most common types of lumps that appear on the sides of feet:

  • Bunions – These hard lumps at the base of your big toe are the result of your first metatarsal and big toe sliding out of alignment. The metatarsal bone ends up bulged out to the side.
  • Tailor’s bunion – This “mini bunion” develops on the outer side of your foot, at the base of your littlest toe. Again, the metatarsal and digit slide out of alignment and create a bulge at the joint.
  • Ganglion cyst – This is a fluid-filled sac that develops from a tendon or joint. It’s a soft lump that may alternately grow or shrink at times.
  • Bone spurs – While these typically develop around the big toe joint or middle of the foot, they can also develop around the back of the heel. Friction or arthritiscan create a small, hard spur.

Of course, it’s also possible for the bump to be something a little more serious. While it isn’t common, tumors can grow on the lower limbs, particularly in the bones. Often these growths are harmless. However, on a rare occasion, they can be cancerous. The only way to know what your lump is for sure is to be properly examined.

The staff at Dallas Podiatry Works could not have been more courteous, helpful, and professional in doing their job. They made me feel comfortable when I was there, which is certainly appreciated. They answered all the questions that I had and just made each visit the most pleasurable that it could be. I would highly recommend them to anyone needing this type of foot care.

I would highly recommend Dr. Brook to anyone with foot problems–especially problems that stump other podiatrists. He really is very caring and very knowledgeable.

Dr. Joel Brook and the staff were nice and helpful. Though I was a new patient, I got right in as soon as they were open in my preferred location. They diagnosed the problem and provided medicines along with a perfect gel bandage so I could keep exercising while my toes healed. My toes already hurt less and look a little better each day. If I have future issues, I will be a repeat customer. Here’s hoping I don’t, but at least I know my feet are in good hands.

I visited this office for an ingrown toe nail a few years ago. After seeing another doctor, who made it worse, he referred me to Dallas Podiatry Works. The doctor there was able to fix my problem. I’m not great with reviews, all I can tell you is that this doctor and staff will have you up and running or doing whatever it is you do in no time. You will be in great hands. You’d be a fool not to use this doctor. Now its time to visit him again for the other toe.
