Those with ankle injuries, foot injuries, or foot pain can benefit from an additional treatment method known as Extracorporeal Pulse Activation Therapy (EPAT). This treatment method is used to treat soft tissue and bone disorders around the foot and ankle. EPAT is acknowledged for its effectiveness in treating foot conditions like Achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis (heel spurs), chronic muscle pain, and fractured bones that are poorly healed. Our Plano and Dallas foot specialist specializes in EPAT to treat foot pain.
The EPAT test is used worldwide with state-of-the-art equipment that has been evaluated and approved by the FDA.
EPAT treatment can be used on tissues that have been hardened by calcium salts. It works by sending sound wave pulses into the affected area. These sound wave pulses cause what’s known as microtrauma, or tiny, controlled injuries in the soft tissue or bone that provoke a healing reaction in your body with improved blood circulation.
EPAT treatment with our Plano or Dallas foot specialist usually lasts around 15 minutes and will be repeated once weekly for three weeks.
EPAT is a non-invasive procedure, meaning recovery will be quick with little down time expected. In some cases, patients may experience mild discomfort or redness around the treatment area. Slight bruising is also possible, but these issues typically resolve themselves within a few days.
Most patients report substantial improvement within a month of treatment, but the full range of benefits could take up to three months for certain patients. Immediate improvement after the procedure has been reported on occasion.
Asked to use a pain scale of 0-10, 83% of patients treated with EPAT have expressed a reduction of at least five scale points for their ankle pain or foot pain. Rarely do patients require invasive surgery, but it may be required in certain cases. There are no complications or side effects from EPAT and no conditions have worsened as a result of the treatment.
