Keep Your Nails On – Prevent Black Toenails from Falling Off

When it comes to the classic saying “the best thing since sliced bread,” we are starting to think—and with all due respect to the many talented bakers here in Dallas, TX—perhaps duct tape should take the place of the proverbial loaf. This genius invention is so versatile that it inspired its own now-classic saying “the only thing duct tape can’t fix is a broken heart.” (Trust us on that one, we’ve tried…) If you really need to keep anything attached, duct tape is often the way to go. Of course, it’s even better not to worry about fixing something in the first place, so let’s look at how to prevent black toenails from falling off completely.

One of the concerns with black toenails is that the pressure from the fluid collecting under the nail can lead to a painful situation. It can also lead to the nail separating from its bed. Instead of potentially having to deal with this, use the following tips:
prevent black toenails from falling off

  • Trim your toenails straight across (instead of rounding them off) and keep them even with the edges of your toes.
  • Make sure your shoes are a thumb’s width longer than your longest toe.
  • Wear steel-toed boots or shoes if you work in an area that increases your risk of having something heavy fall on your feet.
  • Do not tear or rip a nail that is partially torn.
  • Keep your feet clean and dry.
  • Wear clean shoes and socks every day.
  • If you observe a breakage in a toenail, bandage it and come to see us if it becomes a problem.

It’s important to keep in mind that when you catch a black toenail, you need to come see us for an accurate diagnosis. Whereas this isn’t particularly common, one of the potential causes of a dark spot under a nail is malignant melanoma. When this is the case, it is best to treat it at the earliest possible stage.

Whether you need assurance that the dark spot is not melanoma or require treatment to prevent a black toenail from falling off, Dallas Podiatry Works is here for you. As versatile as the beloved duct tape, we can provide information or care for virtually any foot or ankle issue you encounter, so contact us today. The doctor has great “bedside manners” when talking to patients. Great staff and comfortable atmosphere.

The staff at Dallas Podiatry Works could not have been more courteous, helpful, and professional in doing their job. They made me feel comfortable when I was there, which is certainly appreciated. They answered all the questions that I had and just made each visit the most pleasurable that it could be. I would highly recommend them to anyone needing this type of foot care.

I would highly recommend Dr. Brook to anyone with foot problems–especially problems that stump other podiatrists. He really is very caring and very knowledgeable.

Dr. Joel Brook and the staff were nice and helpful. Though I was a new patient, I got right in as soon as they were open in my preferred location. They diagnosed the problem and provided medicines along with a perfect gel bandage so I could keep exercising while my toes healed. My toes already hurt less and look a little better each day. If I have future issues, I will be a repeat customer. Here’s hoping I don’t, but at least I know my feet are in good hands.

I visited this office for an ingrown toe nail a few years ago. After seeing another doctor, who made it worse, he referred me to Dallas Podiatry Works. The doctor there was able to fix my problem. I’m not great with reviews, all I can tell you is that this doctor and staff will have you up and running or doing whatever it is you do in no time. You will be in great hands. You’d be a fool not to use this doctor. Now its time to visit him again for the other toe.
