Heel Pain Prevention Tips

Heel Pain Prevention TipsHeel pain is a common issue that brings many patients in to see us here at Dallas Podiatry Works. In part, this is because the heel—and the foot in general—is exposed to tremendous force loads during physical activity. Even simply walking places several hundred tons of force on the feet! Combine that with the various causes of heel pain (plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinitis, Sever’s disease, bursitis, etc.) and it’s easy to see why heel pain prevention tips can be so helpful.

When you experience pain in the back of your foot, we can provide the care you need. Of course, we would rather you were able to prevent heel pain from happening in the first place. With this in mind, some tips to reduce your risk of injury include:

  • Maintaining a healthy weight. Keeping your bodyweight in a healthy, recommended range will minimize stress on your fascia and lower your risk of developing plantar fasciitis.
  • Wearing supportive footwear.Shoes that fit properly and feature solid arch support and shock absorbency will assist your feet in distributing and absorbing the tremendous amounts of force placed on them while walking and running.
  • Cross-training. If your workout plan is centered on high-impact activities, swap some of them out for low-impact ones like swimming, cycling, and even yoga. This will lower your injury risk, but also provide you with greater overall levels of fitness.
  • Stretch regularly. Stretching exercises will keep your calf muscles, plantar fascia, and Achilles tendons limber and less likely to become injured.
  • Warm up before activity. Before running or engaging in intense physical activity, be sure to take 5-10 minutes and perform a light warm-up and then follow it with some dynamic stretches.

These tips to head off heel pain will reduce your risk of developing common issues like plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinitis, and bursitis. Of course, if you are already dealing with painful symptoms in the back of your foot, our medical professionals are ready to help. Fortunately, most of the problems are resolved with the use of nonsurgical treatment options.

The doctor has great “bedside manners” when talking to patients. Great staff and comfortable atmosphere.

The staff at Dallas Podiatry Works could not have been more courteous, helpful, and professional in doing their job. They made me feel comfortable when I was there, which is certainly appreciated. They answered all the questions that I had and just made each visit the most pleasurable that it could be. I would highly recommend them to anyone needing this type of foot care.

I would highly recommend Dr. Brook to anyone with foot problems–especially problems that stump other podiatrists. He really is very caring and very knowledgeable.

Dr. Joel Brook and the staff were nice and helpful. Though I was a new patient, I got right in as soon as they were open in my preferred location. They diagnosed the problem and provided medicines along with a perfect gel bandage so I could keep exercising while my toes healed. My toes already hurt less and look a little better each day. If I have future issues, I will be a repeat customer. Here’s hoping I don’t, but at least I know my feet are in good hands.

I visited this office for an ingrown toe nail a few years ago. After seeing another doctor, who made it worse, he referred me to Dallas Podiatry Works. The doctor there was able to fix my problem. I’m not great with reviews, all I can tell you is that this doctor and staff will have you up and running or doing whatever it is you do in no time. You will be in great hands. You’d be a fool not to use this doctor. Now its time to visit him again for the other toe.
