Child Foot Care Tips
During summer vacation kids have fun playing at any of our countless parks, or swimming and splashing at the 17 outdoor pools in Dallas. Of course, some things should definitely not be reserved solely for summer, like child foot care. Sure, we want your children to have healthy feet to enjoy the time off from school, but we want the same for them all year long!
To help with this, we’ve compiled four top tips to care for children’s feet:
- Provide the right footwear. If your child participates in a sport, make sure he or she has the right shoes for the activity (basketball shoes for basketball, etc.). Beyond this, make sure they fit correctly. Tight shoes crowd the toes together in front and lead to an array of issues. Loose footwear, on the other hand, can allow feet to slide around inside and increase the risk of blisters, corns, and calluses. Not sure what constitutes an ideal fit? Contact us and we can help!
- Help them stretch their lower limbs. Stretching their feet and lower calf muscles will help kids avoid potential injuries. You can spend some quality time together by doing the stretches with them. Our professionals can recommend the best stretches to reduce injury risk for your whole family.
- Trim their toenails correctly. Too often, improper nail trimming leads to ingrown toenails, which can be painful. The main problem is toenails that are trimmed too short or are rounded off. Toenails should be clipped straight across and kept roughly even with the edge of the toes.
- Have them rest. Being active is important for young bodies, especially in this world of on-demand entertainment and video games. Kids need to be out playing and getting exercise, but year-round participation in a sport or too much activity can actually increase injury risk in the lower limbs. Have your child do a variety of sports and other activities for the best overall wellness and fitness, but they should take breaks from activity as well.
