"Hi my name is Dr. David Northcutt, I’m one of the podiatrists here at Dallas Podiatry Works. I want to talk a little bit today about stress fractures.

Stress fractures are tiny hairline fractures that can occur in the bones of the foot. Stress fractures are usually caused by increasing training too quickly, improper training habits or training on the wrong surfaces, improper shoes, flatfoot and other deformities, and even osteoporosis. These small breaks in the bones of the feet can lead to a complete break to the bone if left untreated.  Signs and symptoms include pain, swelling, redness and possibly even bruising. This usually becomes worse with more activity. To diagnose stress fractures, a physical exam will be performed. X-rays and sometimes other types of imaging studies will be needed. You should be examined as early as possible to start treatment and possibly shorten recovery time if you suspect a stress fracture.

Treatment includes rest, immobilization, and sometimes non-weight bearing of the affected foot or ankle. Usually surgery is not needed, unless the stress fracture develops into a full fracture of the bone and stabilization might be needed. If you suspect you may have a stress fracture, please call us at Dallas Podiatry Works. We would be honored to be a part of your health care team."
