Diabetic and Therapeutic Shoes | Diabetic Foot Care

Dr. Joel W. Brook
Dr. Joel Brook is a board-certified podiatrist and foot and ankle surgeon at Dallas Podiatry Works in TX.

Hi, my name is Jordan and I’m one of Dr. Brook’s medical assistants. Today I’m going to be talking to you about diabetic shoes. The use of diabetic shoes and custom orthotics are part of a preventative and therapeutic treatment for our diabetic patients. Diabetic shoes have come a long way. We now have different styles, some being tennis shoe, and then some being more of a casual shoe.

We use multiple companies to order our diabetic shoes. We have different catalogues and also websites that we can show you to choose from.

Based off from your foot exam, your doctor will either prescribe a custom-molded insert. We would use this foam impression box to get an impression of both of your feet, or we will prescribe you a heat-mold insert which will actually mold to the heat from the bottom of your foot over a period of 7 days.

When picking out a shoe, I will help you try to pick out the one that’s right for your condition. I will use a device to measure the length and width of your foot so we make sure your shoe fits you properly. I will prepare all of the necessary paperwork to send over to your primary care doctor that they will need to sign in order to get your shoes. Whenever I receive your shoes, I will give you a call and you can come in and try them on and make sure they’re fitting properly. At that time, when you take home your shoes, you have six months, no questions asked, to bring them back, if you need to return them.

If you have any questions, please give us a call. Thank you for being our patient. We are honored to be a part of your healthcare team.
