Why You Might Need a Digital Gait Analysis

Gait analysisAs medical technology continues to improve, foot specialists are able to be much more sophisticated in assessing, diagnosing, and treating problems. One obvious example of this is digital scanning and gait analysis, a tool we use to study the mechanics of your feet and ankles as you stand, stride, and run.

Many painful problems and conditions that affect feet, ankles, or even knees, hips, and back originate in the mechanics of your feet. It makes sense: your feet, after all, are the foundation for your entire body. If they are out of alignment when you stand and walk, the ramifications are felt throughout your entire skeleton. Every other joint has to adjust in order to accommodate the problems below.

Now as in the past, the most effective treatment remedies for misaligned feet or abnormal gait patterns include both custom orthotics and gait training, or exercises to help improve your foot and ankle biomechanics. To do either successfully, however, requires us to create and extremely accurate “map” of your feet. Digital scanning and gait analysis allows us to do this better than ever before.

The technology uses sensors to capture the shape and contours of your feet in precise detail. The older-school approach to creating orthotics, for example, would have required us to make a mold of your feet using plaster or a foam box, and review the biomechanics of your gait using good old fashioned visual examination (and videotape). But with digital scanning and gait analysis, we can get much more sophisticated data—not just about the shape of your feet, but especially how they move and adjust during walking, running, and other physical activities. That data helps us craft even better custom orthotics that are able to address your unique feet and movement style with even more precision.

If you’re struggling with foot pain that keeps you from enjoying your hobbies, participating in sports, or just getting through your workday without pain and discomfort, a digital foot scan and gait analysis may be just what you need to get the relief you deserve.
