When you relentlessly pound your feet up and down the field or court, you can just about expect that at some point you will suffer an injury. One of the most common complaints may not be an actual diagnosis, but rather is a complaint of heel pain.

Overuse InjuriesHeel pain may be the result of overuse and the only cure for it is rest. The problem is that many people choose to ignore early warning signs and make heroic attempts to ignore the problem. Heel pain will not get better if left untreated and continued use sets you up for more serious injury. Pain in the foot usually forces your body to compensate in other ways, which can lead to pain in other areas of the body. For example, if you suffer heel pain in your foot, you may begin to limp. This affects muscles in the legs, bone alignment, joint performance and your posture. Other body parts that suffer the consequences are unknowing and unwilling participants in a domino effect. Once an injury occurs your body’s self- protective mechanisms are weakened leaving you more susceptible to future injuries. If you think of your feet as the foundation of a building, it’s easy to understand that if the foundation crumbles, the strength and integrity of the building is compromised. The structure weakens and cracks, begins to lean and eventually the likelihood of the building remaining upright is in question.

Good bio mechanics and muscle balance is necessary in order for the body to avoid overuse injuries. Thankfully, there are a number of things that can be done in order to correct faults.

  • Exercises can strengthen the foot and ankle. When done properly and over time the feet and ankles will be better conditioned and able to support the tons of stress they must endure each day. Your feet are equal to the task if you just provide them with a little consideration.
  • Orthotics may be necessary to correct faulty mechanics. Your doctor can determine whether inserts will help, or if custom orthotics would be necessary for your specific situation

Heel pain has many causes. See Drs. Brook and Northcutt at Dallas Podiatry Works for an accurate diagnosis of your foot pain.
