Rollerblading, or in-line skating as some call it, is a great way to stay in shape. Around the Dallas, TX area, there are some fantastic spots to go—try the trails at Breckenridge Park, Fair Park, or River Legacy Park. With fall rolling in, getting outdoors is a great chance to see some beautiful scenery while sneaking in a workout at the same time. Injury prevention doesn’t require a lot of effort, but these easy tips will go a long way in keeping you safe while you are gliding along.

Rollerblading Safety TipsFirst, if you are a beginner, learn the basic skills before heading out. Suit up with all the protective gear you will need to protect your knees, wrists, elbows, and head. Warm up exercises before and after you skate will help you avoid a muscle strain. Opt to steer clear of busy, crowded walkways or trails, so you have plenty of space to move comfortably. It is also a good idea to research the trail system before you go, or look for reviews from other skaters. A trail that is not maintained, or is in need of resurfacing, could mean spots that are chopped up or full of debris, which pose a danger to any in-line skater.

Next is the importance of the right pair of skates. If the boot puts too much pressure on any area of your foot, you could wind up with blisters. When trying them on, wear the socks you would normally wear, kick your feet to the back before buckling them up, and be sure your heel does not move up and down while you skate. If you have pain while rollerblading, something is wrong and needs to be addressed if you want to avoid a foot or ankle injury.
