Unsightly Toenail InfectionAre you one of the millions who are bothered by thickened yellow nails? Perhaps they have crumbling edges and are turning darker day by day? It could be nail fungus developing, and because of the persistent nature of onychomycosis (nail fungus) you will want to see Drs. Brook and Northcutt at Dallas Podiatry Works right away to get it treated. Don’t let it get a strong “foot hold.”

Nail fungus is an infection that may first appear as a small white or yellowish spot at the tip of your nail. As the infection spreads, your nail may thicken and darken. It becomes unpleasant to look at, sometimes has an odor and eventually may cause pain. Toenail fungus is hard to treat and once treated, they can possibly recur.

Factors that increase your risk of nail infection include:

  • Working in warm and moist surroundings
  • Age
  • Perspiring heavily
  • Psoriasis
  • Walking barefoot in public areas like pools, gyms and showers
  • Athlete's foot
  • Diabetes or other circulatory problems

Thankfully, there is a laser treatment now approved by the FDA for treatment of nail fungus. It is called the Q Clear Q Switch laser. Laser treatments have been around for about 20 years, but only recently has one been developed that had truly positive results. Others have been not so effective and cost more to provide. The Q Clear laser works efficiently to kill the fungus in the nail bed and sometimes only requiring one treatment. Once the fungus is killed, your body takes over and grows a clear healthy nail, but this will take several months. The treatment only takes about 10 minutes to treat both feet, and people state the procedure is pain free, with the only sensation being a slight tingling in the immediate area.

If you are one of the millions who is embarrassed by the unsightly condition of your fungus infected toenails and have tried the home remedies, over the counter preparations, liquids, oils and creams, only to have minimal success, call Drs. Brook and Northcutt from Dallas Podiatry Works at (972) 566-7474 in Dallas, or (972) 943-3323 Baylor/Plano and learn about the Q Clear laser and how you can get a cosmetic makeover for your toes!

Do you have a fungal nail success story to share? We would love to hear your comments!
