Watch Your Feet – That Ground Could Be Hot, Hot, Hot!

In the hot summer months, the temperatures can be blistering - literally! If you live in an area where the heat spikes, you may have heard someone comment, “It’s so hot I could cook an egg on the sidewalk!” The reality is that when it is hot outside, it’s not just the air that heats up. Hot cement can be a real hidden danger that attacks when you aren’t aware.

Avoid Blisters This Summer

Last summer, Rebecca Friesen, a young woman from McKinney, TX, suffered second-degree burns on her feet while taking a short walk - and she was wearing shoes! How does that happen, you ask? The temperature that day had jumped to 108 degrees and her footwear of choice was a pair of flip-flops. The lack of protection and insulation against the hot cement left her with painful blisters that developed as soon as she got back home.

All of us at Dallas Podiatry Works urge patients in the Dallas and Plano, TX area to be extremely careful and protect feet from burning on hot cement. Concrete can reach temperatures as high as 145 degrees, and skin can burn within 5 seconds of exposure. Rebecca’s story reminds us of the dangers of thin-soled flip-flops as well.

Diabetics – this warning is especially for you! Even a minor burn or blister can turn into a wound that leaves you in serious trouble. Nerve damage may impair your ability to feel how hot the ground is, so always wear thick-soled shoes any time you go outside, even if it is just to grab the newspaper!

If you have sustained a foot injury, please call us today for help. You don’t want a foot problem to hinder your chance to get in some last minute summer fun. Call Drs. Joel Brook or David Northcutt at (972) 566-7474 in Dallas, TX or (972) 943-3323 in Plano, TX to make an appointment today.
