Pampering Sore Feet after Standing at Work All Day
When was the last time you did something truly for yourself? Many of us work tirelessly for others, which can be very rewarding, but it is healthy to take care of your own needs as well. If standing at work all day is a requirement of your job, we encourage you to take a time out once in awhile and pamper your feet. Sore feet can make your whole body feel fatigued, but there are some easy ways you can find to ease your pain at home.
There are so many occupations that require being on your feet. Whether you are a teacher, hair stylist, construction worker, line cook, waiter, bank teller, grocery clerk or retail manger, a great job can still do a great number on your feet. When you get home and all you can think about are your sore feet, start with a cold footbath. What you may not realize is that your aching and soreness is often due to the damage done to blood vessels and muscles from standing or walking all day long. Icing reduces the swelling and inflammation that can result and helps the body heal faster. We can recommend a safe over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication to help diminish pain and swelling as well.
Another great tip is to stretch out your foot muscles by massaging your sole on a tennis ball or over a frozen water bottle. Next, take it easy and force yourself to rest. Stay off your feet and keep them elevated when possible. While you are sitting, cross one foot over the other leg and grab your toes. Gently pull them towards you to stretch the plantar fascia, the ligament that runs along the bottom of your foot. This is a common area for injury, and keeping it stretched will prevent tissue strains.
If you have persistent pain, it may be necessary to change your footwear or use custom orthotic inserts for pain relief. You could also have an injury that you are unaware of. At Dallas Podiatry Works, we can diagnose the source of your discomfort and provide you with treatment that will resolve your pain and protect you from future problems. Call Dr. Joel W. Brook and Dr. David R. Northcutt in Dallas, TX at (972) 566-7474 or in Plano, TX at (972) 943-3323.
