Making a New Year’s resolution to be healthier is one of the most common ones out there. Diet, weight loss, and exercise can be exciting starting off points or a set of daunting tasks that has one in fear from the start. It can be especially hard if you are trying to make it a family effort. With childhood obesity continually on the rise, keeping kids healthy is a must. Parents need to pave the way, so getting the whole family involved in a healthier lifestyle is a great way to start out the New Year. To be successful, it is a good idea to set manageable goals that are achievable for everyone in the family. A resolution for kids and adults alike is to find an activity or sport and get involved, even if each picks a different one.
As a family, put a big emphasis on cooking healthier foods, making good lunches and snacks and limiting the soda and sugary drinks. Families are often encouraged to do a full “pantry raid.” It takes some discipline and resolve, but the benefits are enormous! There are some great healthy alternatives to the bad food you might be used to and you can find fun recipes online the kids can get involved in making. Calendars fill up quick for busy families, so sit down and block out time to make these healthy decisions work for you.
You may have to sacrifice, but the end goal is worth it and your family will be closer and healthier as a result!
