Is Bunion Surgery Right for You?

Some people live with their bunions for years—or decades—before they get their foot deformity corrected surgically. Others never do. A few even ask about it right away, when the bump is still fairly minor.

Since bunions aren’t a “medical emergency,” bunion surgery is an elective procedure. You get to decide if and when the time is right. So how will you know?

At Dallas Podiatry Works, we’re here to help guide you through that decision so you can make an informed choice, when you’re ready. We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all bunion treatment, but instead develop custom plans for care based on individual goals and preferences.

Some of the factors that can help you make that decision include:

  • How severe is the bunion?
  • How much is the bunion affecting your daily life? Are you experiencing any pain? Is it difficult to walk or wear shoes comfortably? Do you find you can’t complete tasks or activities you used to enjoy?
  • Have you tried any conservative remedies, such as physical therapy, orthotics, or taping? How long? What was the result?
  • Have you noticed the bunion worsening over time?
  • After surgery, you may not be able to put weight on your foot for several weeks. Are you prepared for this? Can you make the necessary accommodations at work and at home?

As we walk through these issues and concerns with you, we can arrive at a mutual decision about what would be best. In most cases, individuals who are experiencing regular pain and swelling that interferes with activity are best served by surgical correction, though we can always attempt conservative measures first to see if they are able to make the difference for you.

The one thing you should never do, however, is wait and wait and wait and never do anything. Bunions will only get progressively worse over time unless you act. By taking control early, you can usually avoid surgery and pain altogether, or at least for a very long time. So pick up the phone and call the team at Dallas Podiatry Works today!
