diet for foot healthWe’ve bid adieu to winter and now it won’t be long until summer is upon us here in Dallas, TX. This means it’s time to start thinking ahead and planning for the warmer temperatures we will face. Whether you are interested in preparing for swimsuit season or would simply like to stay comfortable when it gets hot, you might want to start making changes to your diet!

When people think about diet and the benefits that come from healthy eating, we are pretty sure they consider matters like lower blood pressure and cholesterol, weight management, and even having improved energy. What many fail to consider is the role of diet in foot health, but this is an important consideration when it comes to smart foot care.

There are many components to a foot care plan that will lower your risk of injury and other medical issues. Let’s take a look at how nutritional considerations affect the health of your feet:

  • Nutrients like Vitamin D and calcium play an instrumental role in bone health. Given the amount of physical force that feet endure throughout the day, it is essential that foot and ankle bones are strengthened to reduce the risk of stress fractures and other breaks.

  • In addition to bone tissue, it is also important that the muscles in the feet and lower legs are strong. To that end, eating lean protein is a wise idea. Strong muscles are able to help the body absorb physical force loads that take place with every step, especially those that happen during high-impact activities (running, jumping).

  • People might think of arthritis in the terms of the wear-and-tear version (osteoarthritis) that happens over time as we grow older, but there is another type that is impacted by dietary habits. Gout is an arthritic condition that develops in response to a byproduct of food breakdown known as uric acid. It is best to eat a diet centered on whole grains, vegetables, legumes, low-fat dairy products, and limited amounts of fish and meat to manage the condition.
