Effective Ankle Sprain Treatment
One of the best ways to contribute to a worthy organization is by participating in a charity 5K fundraiser, and there is a great opportunity to do so on June 11. The Susan G. Komen North Texas Plano Race for the Cure is an event held in Plano, TX to support breast cancer research. That is certainly a worthy cause, but running and training can contribute to your own physical wellness at the same time, which is a true win-win! Just be careful when running so you don’t suffer an injury and need to undergo ankle sprain treatment.
Of course, even if you aren’t staying active by playing sports or training for Plano’s Race for the Cure, you could still potentially suffer from an ankle sprain. All it takes is misjudging a step or not noticing unevenness in the surface on which you are walking, and then an ankle can rotate beyond its intended range. When this happens, the connective ligaments can become stretched or torn. In a serious injury, a ligament can even completely tear.
The good news is almost all ankle sprains can be effectively treated with conservative care. Even a completely torn ligament can heal successfully without surgical repair if the proper steps are followed and the affected ankle is immobilized appropriately.
There are three phases in treatment for all ankle sprains:
- Phase 1 is to rest, protect the injured ankle, and control the swelling and inflammation.
- Phase 2 is to start using doctor-recommend exercises to restore flexibility, strength, and range-of-motion.
- Phase 3 is to start using maintenance exercises and gradually return to certain activities that do not require the ankle to twist or turn. Other activities will be slowly added over time.
A sprained ankle might not seem like a big deal, but returning to intense physical activity before it is healed can lead to chronic ankle instability. This means a weaker ankle that is more susceptible to sprains. As such, be sure to follow the treatment plan we provide for you!
