There are a few things in life that can be annoying, frustrating and even embarrassing. For some, having spider veins fit that bill. One might say that spider veins are a rite of passage as we age, as they occur in about 60% of adults, but understanding what they are and what causes them may help you avoid them altogether.Jagged purple spider veins

Spider veins are similar to varicose veins but they are typically smaller and closer to the surface of the skin. They often resemble spider webs or the branches of a tree and are red or blue. You might have one very tiny one or they can cover a fairly large area of skin.

What caused my spider veins to appear?

Spider veins appear when blood flow is restricted inside the vein and gets backed up, resulting in an area of pooled blood. When this happens, the pressure causes the walls of the vein to weaken and swell and what results is a spider vein. It is a common thought that spider veins only happen to women. While women are twice as susceptible, anyone can get one. Some of the factors that may increase your risk are:

  • A job that keeps you on your feet
  • Age
  • Pregnancy
  • Obesity
  • Trauma
  • Prior surgery
  • Family history
  • Sun exposure

If you see a vein that is swollen and warm to the touch, you notice any skin that has changed color or have pain from a spider vein, contact our podiatric office today. Drs. Joel Brook and David Nothcutt will be able to assess the severity of your condition and offer a treatment plan that will help.
