Does your foot look like this? The World’s Largest Dinos is an exhibit coming to the Perot Museum of Nature and Science in Dallas, TX. This exhibit, taking place from April 6-September 1, 2014 will give you an inside look at the largest dinosaurs that have walked on the earth. If you want to get your feet fit for spring but have what you feel are the world’s largest bunions, it may be time to consider bunion surgery.

Bunions are progressive, meaning they tend to get worse over time without intervention or appropriate treatment. While there are many conservative treatment options to help manage their progress and discomfort, there are times when they get severe. We have met many patients who put up with severe pain and lifestyle limitations for a long time due to fear of surgery. While we always exhaust conservative options first, surgery can be an effective way to alleviate your pain and get you active again when other options don’t work.

A common concern about bunion surgery is what the recovery will be like, and how much time off will be needed for healing. The type of procedures will depend on the severity of your deformity, and each will require a certain recovery period. The usual time frame is 6 weeks to 6 months; in severe situations it could take up to a year for complete healing. Stitches are usually removed within 7-21 days, and if pins are used, they are usually taken out after 3-4 weeks. It is likely you will be in a walking cast, boot, or special shoe for 4-5 weeks, and the non-weight bearing period can last up to 8 weeks, depending on the type of surgery. While this may seem overwhelming, if surgery is the most viable treatment option for you, we will walk with you through every step of the process.
