It lurks in warm, damp places and can go undetected for months. No, we are not talking about the main character in the latest zombie movie – we are talking about toenail fungus! This nail infection is not something to take lightly and unless you want to deal with a chronic problem that leaves your nails discolored, thickened and possibly foul-smelling, keep reading for ways to avoid it!

At Dallas Podiatry Works, fungal nail infections are commonly seen. While we have the latest, state-of-the-art treatments to help our patients, we want to encourage you that there are many ways you can prevent it from happening in the first place, or from recurring if it has attacked your nails already.

Treating Fungal ToenailsOne of the first lines of defense is to properly care for your nails. Keep your toenails trimmed straight across, short and clean. Avoid picking at the skin around your nails as this could leave an area prone to infection. The bacteria and fungi that lead to fungal infections thrive in warm, damp places, making your shoes a prime breeding ground. Be proactive by wearing socks that have moisture-wicking properties, and change them if your feet tend to sweat during the day. Use an antifungal powder or spray on your feet and inside your shoes and if you need to walk around a public area such as a pool, shower or locker room, avoid going barefoot.

The last thing you can do is look at your feet – often! This type of infection can start as a small dot on a nail and grow unnoticed for a long time until aggressive treatment is the only option to get rid of it. Take action as soon as you notice any symptoms. If you need treatment for a toenail problem, please contact us today. Drs. Joel Brook and David Northcutt can get you on the path to healthy nails right away. Make an appointment by calling our office in Dallas, TX at (972) 566-7474 or in Plano, TX at (972) 943-3323.
